Michaela Fissel

Michaela works throughout the behavioral health system of Connecticut; while regularly advocating at the state and national level for prioritizing the needs of young people who experience mental health and substance use challenges. Michaela is on the Board of Directors for North Central Regional Mental Health Board and the Capitol Area Substance Abuse Council located here in Windsor. Finally, Michaela is an appointed member of the CT - SIM Consumer Advisory Board. Through her work, she has become keenly aware of the intersecting systems which govern the direction of local education and seeks to apply her experience to strengthen the educational system of Windsor.
For example, as a current member of the Windsor Board of Education, Michaela identified that our school district would benefit from the inclusion of substance abuse prevention in the health curriculum to ensure that all students receive this critical information as outlined in CT General Statute 10-19. In addition, she had continuously sought to improve the academic, social, and emotional outcomes for the children of Windsor. This includes seeking, and successfully blocking, the controversial preschool expansion at Roger Wolcott. In this later example, Michaela always stated that she “supports preschool, but can not support our most vulnerable children being put into a throwaway building.”
Michaela says that she made the decision to run for the Board of Education because she believes: “It is time for our elected leaders to value community involvement across neighborhoods and groups; while working to strengthen the voices of our parents and teachers as allies. In large part, the foundation for academic success is established within the home at an early age. We must maintain that through a partnership between supportive resources, as we nurture, support, and guide our children.”
“I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue to bring my training, expertise, and enthusiasm to the Windsor Board of Education. As a lifelong resident of Windsor and young mother with school age children, I can promise you that I am committed to strengthening the educational system for OUR kids and community.”
Quote: “I am committed to strengthening the educational system for Windsor, and working towards eliminating barriers to success so every child achieves their personal excellence.”
